Entry No. 11 — the Washington, D.C. file — filed under: speakeasy

Captain Gregory's

From the sidewalk it reads as an ordinary Old Town donut shop. A tucked-away wall panel in the back room opens onto an award-winning craft-cocktail speakeasy, which just finished a February 2025 expansion into the former sandwich shop next door.

The story

You pull up to 804 N Henry Street in Old Town Alexandria expecting a standard neighborhood donut shop. But behind the sugary counter display lies a secondary disguise: a fake front for "Captain Gregory's boat tours and excursion travel agency." The real payload isn't charter boats—it’s a tucked-away wall panel in the back room that swings open to reveal a hidden cocktail bar.

When it quietly opened around 2015 inside Sugar Shack Donuts, the speakeasy held a tiny 22 seats. Rather than relying solely on the secret-door novelty, the bar built a serious local reputation on scratch-made bitters, house infusions, and tinctures served on constantly rotating menus. In February 2025, the operation expanded into the former sandwich shop next door, gaining crucial extra seating without giving up its hidden-panel entrance.

What it's like

Secure a Resy spot well in advance—tables remain limited despite the recent expansion. You'll walk into the donut shop storefront, head toward the back room, and step through the hidden wall panel into a dark, candlelit space. Buy a donut up front if you want the full experience, then sit down and skip the basic drink calls; the house-infused, custom-bitter seasonal cocktails are the entire point of coming.

The move: Buy a donut up front like any other customer, then follow the hidden wall panel back to a candlelit table and work through the cocktail menu together.
