Sound Bath at the JCC — Sound, Soak & Movement in Salt Lake City

Entry No. 35 — the Salt Lake City file — filed under: sound bath

Sound Bath at the JCC

Roughly one Sunday afternoon a month (2-3 PM), the Jewish Community Center's ordinary fitness 'Stretch Studio' is cleared of yoga mats and filled with singing bowls, gongs, drums, and chimes for a 60-minute sound journey — a recurring ritual hiding inside a mainstream community-center schedule.

The story

Head up Medical Drive toward the foothills and you’ll find the Salt Lake Jewish Community Center—a busy civic complex where people routinely swap locker room chatter, run laps, and track heart rates. But check the fitness schedule closely enough and you’ll spot a monthly anomaly hiding right between the routine workout listings.

Roughly one Sunday afternoon a month from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, staff clear out the ordinary mirror-lined 'Stretch Studio.' In place of routine foam rolling and stretching, the room fills with brass singing bowls, gongs, drums, and chimes for an hour-long sound journey—a deep acoustic ritual happening inside a standard neighborhood health club.

What it's like

You’ll walk past the treadmills and front-desk check-in at 2 N Medical Drive and duck into the Stretch Studio before 2:00 PM. Bring your own mat or blanket if you want extra cushion on the floor, then lie down and let the room fill with metallic vibrations and gong pulses. The juxtaposition of gym noise echoing down the corridor while you lie motionless on the floor is half the draw. Check the JCC’s online event schedules beforehand to verify that month's specific Sunday date.

The move: Show up Sunday at 2pm, lie on the studio floor together for the hour-long sound journey, and grab something at Sugar House afterward.
