Tijon — Create Your Own Perfume
A French-Caribbean fragrance house that opened its first-ever U.S. shop on Market Street, where a 90-minute session has you blending your own scent from hundreds of oils and premixed accords — arrive scent-free, since even your deodorant can throw off the nose. Their house Charleston line is named for local landmarks: Verdigris, Indigo Row, Pink House.
The story
Tijon didn't originate in South Carolina—it began in 2007 in the French-Caribbean village of Grand Case, St. Martin, where founder John Berglund adapted traditional perfume formulation techniques from Grasse, France. When local partners brought the concept to 164-B Market Street, it became the brand's first brick-and-mortar storefront in the continental United States, tucked right into downtown Charleston's historic district.
Inside, the experience is less retail browsing and more hands-on chemistry. Guests put on white lab coats and sit down before an organ of roughly 300 essential oils and fragrance accords alongside a selection of pre-mixed base blends. Over ninety minutes, you blend three test formulations using glass beakers, funnels, and droppers, tracking exact drop counts in a perfuming workbook until you land on a scent that works.
Once you select your favorite blend, staff bottle a full 55ml Eau de Parfum for you to name and take home, and your precise formula is logged into their archive for future reorders. If you prefer off-the-shelf scents, their house Charleston line translates local landmarks into bottle form—including Verdigris (sea salt, dune grass, and white musk), Indigo Row (leather, amber, and oakmoss), and Pink House (plum, magnolia, and bergamot).
What it's like
Show up completely unperfumed—no scented lotion, body spray, or heavily fragranced deodorant, because even subtle background smells throw off your olfactory sense when evaluating fine accords. The vibe inside is calm and focused lab work: you'll put on a white lab coat, work through rows of labeled glass droppers, and slowly build test vials at a personal workstation. Sniffing hundreds of notes gets intense quickly, so take scent breaks while narrowing down your three test formulas. You will leave with a 55ml atomizer bottle of your custom scent, a workbook, and your personal recipe saved on file.
The move: Sit down together and blend a joint signature scent (or dueling ones) from the wall of oils, then leave with a 55ml bottle, atomizer, and a little perfuming workbook to take home.

Good to know
Do I really need to arrive scent-free?
Yes. Even perfumed soap, scented hand lotion, or strong deodorant can distort your nose when trying to isolate subtle base notes and accords from hundreds of bottles.
What comes with the 90-minute Mix & Match class?
You get a white lab coat to wear during class, access to 12 premixed base blends and roughly 300 fragrance oils to blend three test vials, a full 55ml bottle of your chosen final fragrance, an atomizer, a perfuming workbook, and a certificate.
Can I reorder my custom fragrance after I finish the bottle?
Tijon keeps your exact formula and recipe name on file in their system so you can reorder refill bottles online whenever you run out.
Can I buy ready-made perfume instead of taking a class?
Yes. You can purchase bottles from their house Charleston collection directly in the shop, including local landmark blends like Verdigris, Indigo Row, and Pink House.
