The thin, unmarked door on the left leads up to a converted rowhouse bar with no cocktail menu at all; bartenders build you something from scratch based on flavors you describe.
The story
Stand outside 1345 S Street NW, right next to Capitol Valet, and you're looking at two side-by-side doors tucked into a converted Shaw rowhouse. Open the door on the right and you're standing in front of dry cleaning racks. Push open the thin, unmarked door on the left and you're climbing a steep, narrow staircase straight into a second-floor residential apartment converted into a drink den.
Opened by industry veterans Tom Brown—who built his reputation at local legend The Passenger—and bartender Mick Perrigo, Left Door operates without the usual cocktail bar theater. There is no leather-bound menu to decode; instead, the bartenders ask what spirits or flavor notes you prefer—citrus, bitter, smoky, or herbal—and build a custom drink on the spot using vintage glassware.

The space is low-lit and compact, feeling more like a friend's living room than a commercial bar, which means seating disappears quickly on peak nights. Because there is no exterior sign to indicate how full it is, you'll want to target weeknights or early evening hours to avoid waiting outside on S Street.
