The story
NW Thurman Street is usually where you go for quiet coffee shops and leafy residential sidewalks, which makes the ten-foot Bigfoot standing on the pavement all the more jarring. Longtime owners Mike and Lisa opened the Freakybuttrue Peculiarium in 2011 as an unabashed love letter to Portland's peculiar side, carving out a space dedicated to cryptids, alien paranoia, and low-brow surrealism right in the middle of Nob Hill.
Instead of standard glass cases housing fragile antiquities, the gallery operates as an immersive art project built mostly by hand. You are encouraged to get directly into the exhibits: lie down on the operating table in a full-scale alien autopsy chamber, stick your head inside a simulated Bigfoot trap, or navigate weird underground art installations that feel like sci-fi movie sets on a DIY budget.
It is short on museum pretense and heavy on tongue-in-cheek sci-fi camp, a formula that earned it a finalist spot for Best Museum in Willamette Week's 2025 'Best of Portland' awards. It remains one of the few places in the neighborhood that stubbornly preserves old-school Portland weirdness.
What it's like
Pay your admission at the front counter—$10 normally, or $7 if you swing by on a Tuesday—and start exploring. The space is compact enough to cover in 30 to 45 minutes, moving between hands-on dioramas and photo ops. Before leaving, stop at the counter to see if you or your companion are brave enough to sample the edible insects on offer, then head back out onto Thurman Street to walk off the surrealism down NW 23rd.
The move: Pay the $10 admission ($7 on Tuesdays), pose for photos in the alien autopsy and Bigfoot-trap dioramas, then dare each other to try the edible bugs at the counter before wandering NW 23rd for dinner.
