The story

Green-Wood Cemetery was carved into 478 acres of Brooklyn hills in 1838 as a Victorian garden burial ground, and today roughly 600,000 people reside beneath its turf. That is more than the living population of many American cities. Most daytime visitors come for the grand Gothic entrance gate or to hunt down high-profile graves like 19th-century political machine boss William "Boss" Tweed and painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. But almost all of them walk right past a grassy hillside, entirely unaware of what sits buried inside it.

Tucked beneath that hill are the Catacombs: a subterranean stone corridor lined with 30 private family vaults behind heavy iron gates. Built into the hillside, the underground space offered crypt burial to families who wanted an alternative to standard ground plots or freestanding mausoleums. Because humidity control and preservation are delicate, the cemetery keeps the heavy iron doors locked tightly to the general public almost every day of the year.

The exception comes on select Friday and Saturday evenings when a guide turns the key for an after-hours tour. You assemble as daylight drops, wandering through the unlit, shadowy grounds at dusk before heading straight down into the normally sealed vault corridor. It is not an actor-led jump-scare attraction; it is a cold, atmospheric look at 19th-century Gotham mortuary architecture hidden entirely beneath the soil.
