The story
You didn't hear it from us, but Spokane's year-round home for the morbidly curious didn't start in a polished retail footprint. Samantha Fetters and Jesse McCauley opened Petunia & Loomis in early 2022 inside a 1,000-square-foot space in the Paulsen Center after Fetters spent four years gathering macabre curiosities, vintage embalming tools, and unusual antiques. Watching over the register from day one was Little King Trashmouth—a crowned taxidermy raccoon that immediately set the tone for what lies inside.
In late 2024, the shop expanded into a 2,300-square-foot storefront at 224 N Howard Street, sandwiched directly between local mainstays Boo Radley's and Atticus Coffee. The floor is packed with ethically sourced wet specimens—animals that died of natural causes preserved in isopropyl alcohol jars—alongside pinned insects, taxidermy mounts, animal skulls, unsettling porcelain dolls, horror comics, and occult tools. Sitting just 35 minutes west across the Washington border, it is the closest true full-scale oddities boutique to Coeur d'Alene, complete with seasonal events like photo sessions with Krampus and a creepy Easter Bunny.
What it's like
Stepping inside the storefront on Howard Street puts you straight into a dimly lit, densely packed cabinet of curiosities scented with incense. You will browse narrow aisles filled with jarred wet specimens, pinned beetles, taxidermy, and rows of vintage porcelain dolls lining the shelves. Downtown street parking right outside can be tight during peak afternoon hours, so look for spots near Riverfront Park or on neighboring side streets. Take your time scanning the lower shelves where smaller occult trinkets and oddities sit, and be sure to check behind the front counter for the crowned raccoon.
The move: Cross into downtown Spokane to browse the jarred wet specimens and taxidermy, pick out a creepy keepsake together, then wander to Riverfront Park afterward.
