For about ten days each winter, downtown Coeur d'Alene becomes a free, walkable wonderland of large-scale, light-based artworks. Past editions featured roughly 17 installations scattered across downtown, including a glowing walk-through 'Tunnel' on the Resort lawn and 'The Beacon' in McEuen Park, with pieces created by Calgary light-art studio B!g Art alongside local Inland Northwest artists. The story
Most winter light displays are just thousands of cheap LEDs wrapped around municipal trees. Winter Lights breaks that mold by turning downtown Coeur d'Alene into a temporary, dark-winter gallery of large-scale light art for roughly ten days each year. Instead of standard holiday kitsch, Calgary light-art studio B!g Art joins forces with Inland Northwest artists to drop around 17 standalone installations directly onto sidewalks, park turf, and lakefront lawns.
The pieces aren't tucked behind gallery glass—they sit right out in the freezing air along the Sherman Avenue corridor and McEuen Park. Past installations have included 'The Beacon' towering in the park, interactive glowing structures like 'The Doors' that visitors can peer inside, and a massive illuminated walk-through tunnel stretching across the Resort lawn. You end up navigating a self-guided route where dark brick alleyways and snow-dusted park grounds suddenly pulse with custom neon, geometric forms, and glowing architecture.

Expect bone-chilling lake air and crunching snow underfoot as you navigate between glowing monoliths. The outdoor loop is entirely free and un-gated, meaning you can walk it at 8 PM on a Tuesday without dealing with velvet ropes or ticket lines. You'll move from the sidewalk hustle of Sherman Avenue out into the darker, open paths of McEuen Park. Dress for serious North Idaho winter—heavy boots, a thick coat, and gloves are non-negotiable if you plan to stand around admiring pieces like 'The Doors' or walking through the Resort lawn tunnel.
