Groundworks Art Lab — Clay Date Night

The story
Long before this non-profit was called Groundworks Art Lab (or its previous handle, Studio Arts Boulder), 1010 Aurora Avenue was Fire Station No. 2. In 1954, acclaimed ceramicist Betty Woodman persuaded the City of Boulder to turn the decommissioned firehouse into the Boulder Pottery Lab, making it the first city-backed public ceramics program in the country. While Groundworks has since expanded its footprint to a sprawling main facility on Canfield Street, the Saturday night clay operations stay rooted inside this historic brick firehouse on University Hill.
The two-hour Clay Date Night isn't a gentle candlelit dinner; it's a muddy hands-on crash course in wheel throwing. You and your partner sit at adjacent pottery wheels, handed raw clay and basic tools while an instructor runs through centering, pulling walls, and managing wheel speeds. From there, you're on your own to coax slump-prone bowls or lopsided mugs out of the spinning clay.
There's no faking skill when centrifugal force takes over. At the end of the night, you choose your single favorite creation per person for the studio staff to glaze and fire (extra pieces cost $5 each to fire), wash off at the sink, and leave the drying and kilning process to the pros. Four to six weeks later, you get the email to come pick up your finished ceramics.

Wear dark clothes you don't mind getting mud-splattered, bring a hair tie if needed, and trim your fingernails short so they don't gouge the wet clay. The studio floor can get slick during cleanup, the instructors keep the mood low-pressure, and tickets sell out weeks in advance on their online portal—you won't get far trying to walk in at 7 PM on a Saturday.
