The story
In 1953, the Vess Beverage Company decided a standard billboard wasn't enough to move their family-sized orange pop. Instead, they raised a 34-foot-tall steel replica that originally rotated on a motorized base and glowed with neon across St. Louis. Vess—a local soda outfit founded around 1916—built the towering bottle as a gaudy piece of mid-century corporate swagger.
Decades later, city boosters planned to build a massive entertainment complex around the monument, officially naming the area 'The Bottle District.' That redevelopment push largely stalled out, leaving the giant steel bottle standing isolated in a quiet lot at 520 O'Fallon Street, just north of downtown and Route 66.
Work crews gave the giant orange bottle a full restoration in 2016 to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary. It no longer spins like it did during the Eisenhower administration, but it remains one of the stranger survivors of Midwest roadside advertising.
