The story
In the early 1920s, while most of California's gold rushes were decades in the rearview mirror, prospectors under the Descanso Mining Company sank a 230-foot incline shaft into the Cuyamaca Mountains. Sitting at an elevation of 3,520 feet, they targeted the Magdalena vein, pulling out gold and silver quartz from the granite hillside. Over the years, local records bounced between names—the Magdalena Mine, the Ellis Mine, or simply the Descanso.
Today, the underground operations are completely silent. The hazardous subterranean workings have been sealed off, and the land surrounding the old shaft has reverted to private property. There are no gift shops or modern tour guides here, just the faint imprint of early 20th-century backcountry mining hidden in the scrub oak.
