Entry No. 5 — the San Diego file — filed under: speakeasy
Captain's Quarters
From the sidewalk it reads as just another Pacific Beach storefront; step through the unassuming door and you're inside a moody 17th-century ship captain's cabin, opened in 2022 as the maritime sister bar to nearby tiki spot The Grass Skirt.
The story
Look at the ordinary storefront on Grand Avenue in Pacific Beach and you would never suspect what is sitting on the other side of the wall. Pass through the unassuming door, however, and you drop straight out of the San Diego sunshine into a dimly lit, wood-paneled 17th-century ship captain's cabin.
Opened in 2022 by Spencer as a maritime sister bar to the nearby tiki haven The Grass Skirt, Captain's Quarters trades rum-soaked tropical kitsch for a darker seafaring mood. The back room is trimmed in salvaged fixtures and lined with oil portraits, while the bar menu breaks from typical beach-town fare with a heavy focus on gin-forward cocktails and galley-inspired bites like fresh seafood.
What it's like
Give your eyes a moment to adjust to the dim lantern-lit atmosphere after you step through the entrance. The dark timbers and salvaged brass make the place feel small and insulated from Grand Avenue's rowdy sidewalk energy. Tables fill up quickly, so book ahead if you want a guaranteed seat. If you linger past 10 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, expect the quiet cocktail lounge atmosphere to shift slightly as the crew rolls out $10 chambongs.
The move: Book a table for the gin-forward cocktail list, then linger past 10pm on a Thursday-Sunday for $10 chambongs and the salvaged-fixture, portrait-lined back room.
