Sculptor Wharton Esherick spent from 1926 to 1966 hand-carving his own hilltop home into an extension of his furniture - curved staircases, sculpted doorframes, and over 300 of his artworks left exactly as he arranged them. The 1956 Workshop was designed with Louis Kahn and Anne Tyng.
The story
In 1926, sculptor Wharton Esherick stopped treating wood as merely a medium for isolated objects and began carving his entire hilltop living space into a single, continuous sculpture. Over four decades on Valley Forge Mountain, he built and endlessly reconfigured his studio home without a master architectural plan—hand-shaping spiraling staircases, swooping doorframes, and custom timber fittings where right angles simply do not exist. By the time he stopped in 1966, the boundary between building and sculpture had collapsed entirely, leaving more than 300 of his personal works sitting exactly where he arranged them.
What makes the property truly surreal is the sudden architectural collision on the ridge. Right beside Esherick's organic, hand-hewn wood structures stands his 1956 Workshop, co-designed with modernist titans Louis Kahn and Anne Tyng. You get hyper-tactile, expressionist hand-craftsmanship standing steps away from stark geometric modernism on the same 12-acre woodland parcel.

You cannot just drive up the hill and wander in—the museum operates strictly by advance reservation from March through December. Once your scheduled tour starts, a guide leads you through the main studio home, where you have to watch your footing on twisted timber steps and check out hand-carved latches on every doorway. Afterwards, spend twenty minutes walking the 12-acre property to see the expressionist log garage and the reconstructed outhouse before heading down into Malvern.
