The crown jewel sitting outdoors is one of only two Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey prototypes on public display anywhere on Earth—a hybrid tiltrotor machine designed to pivot its giant propellers straight up to hover like a helicopter and rotate them forward to fly like an airplane. Inside, the obsession extends deep into the paper trail: the Renzo Pierpaoli Memorial Library stores a research archive of technical records and documents chronicling the engineers who figured out how to keep heavy metal hovering in midair without stalling.
What it's like
Expect an uncompromising, hands-on mechanical hangar experience. Instead of keeping every machine locked behind velvet ropes, the museum lets you climb directly inside designated cockpits to grab the flight controls and inspect the instrument panels up close. You can spend an hour analyzing early civilian autogyros and military transport choppers, then step outside onto the pavement to stand directly underneath the towering tiltrotor housing of the V-22 Osprey.
The move: Climb into the cockpits visitors are allowed to sit in, then walk the outdoor fleet before poking through the Renzo Pierpaoli Memorial Library's rotorcraft archive.
