Old Man River Statue

The story
Most people strolling through Woldenberg Park are focused on the riverboats or dodging gulls, completely walking past the 18-foot monolithic figure looming right along the bank. Sculpted by Robert Schoen in 1991, Old Man River was carved from a single, gargantuan 17-ton block of imported white Carrara marble. Instead of giving New Orleans another conventional bronze general on horseback, Schoen carved a stark, abstract human silhouette thrusting its arms straight toward the sky, rooted on a stepped, ridged base meant to mimic the churning currents of the Mississippi.
The statue's sleek, almost prehistoric design looks less like late-20th-century public art and more like a ancient totem left behind by a forgotten civilization. Salt air, Gulf humidity, and river grime eventually took their toll on the stone, requiring specialized conservators to carefully color-match and replicate the original marble veining during restoration. The weirdness comes from its setting: pale, refined Italian marble standing shoulder-to-shoulder with roaring diesel tugboats, rusted cargo barges, and heavy industrial river traffic.
