The story

In a state that famously made indoor public smoking a relic of the late twentieth century, Hellam’s is an impossible anomaly hiding in plain sight on Alvarado Street. Established in 1893—making it the single oldest operating business in Monterey—it sold its first cigar when downtown was still dirt paths and coastal garrison officers. It shifted to its current address at 423 Alvarado in 1934, and in over 130 years of continuous operation, exactly two families have held the keys to the front door.

Step past the front counter displays and you hit the real secret: a fully stocked walk-in humidor sharing floor space with a wine bar tucked into the back of the shop. Current owner Wyatt Miller keeps the place running as an unhurried, slow-tempo refuge, pairing rolled tobacco with heavy local wine pours. You are sitting inside a living legal loophole where light grey smoke drifts toward dark ceiling beams while tourists outside on Alvarado peer through the windows, wondering how this setup is still standing.
