Entry No. 44 — the Minneapolis file — filed under: bathhouse

Watershed Spa

This subterranean communal bathhouse breaks from traditional spa earth tones with vibrant neon colors and a seven-part bathing ritual. It features a frigid cold plunge, steam room, and warm pool set beneath a glowing projection wall of cosmic and nature scenes.

The story

Forget the predictable muted beige tiles and hushed bamboo waterfalls of your standard day spa. Tucked underground on 2nd Street SE in Marcy-Holmes, Watershed Spa converts contrast hydrotherapy into a neon-lit subterranean ritual. Founded by Nell Rueckl—the practitioner behind Minneapolis's Spot Spa—the venue throws out the solitary sensory-deprivation trope in favor of a social, subterranean bathing sanctuary.

The experience revolves around a seven-part contrast bathing sequence that shuttles you between a dry sauna, steam room, warm soaking pool, and an icy cold plunge. The visual anchor of the space is a massive glowing projection wall displaying fluid cosmic and natural landscapes, specifically curated by a local hypnotherapist to pull your mind into a soft, hypnotic haze while you float.

What it's like

You’ll descend below street level, suit up (swimsuits are mandatory here), and cycle through the hot-and-cold circuit at your own tempo. The crowd leans friendly and conversational without feeling loud or disruptive. After gasping your way through the cold plunge, lay back on a lower-level lounge bed and let the hypnotic neon projection wall wash over you for half an hour.

The move: Book a 2.5-hour communal bath session together, cycle through the hot-and-cold contrast therapy, and then lay side-by-side on the lower level watching the neon-lit cosmic projection wall curated by a local hypnotherapist.
