The story
Before Thomas Whaley laid down thousands of handmade bricks in 1857 to construct his ambitious family mansion, the dirt plot beneath it served as San Diego’s public execution site. In 1852, Santiago “Yankee Jim” Robinson was hanged here from the back of a wagon for grand larceny. Because the gallows crossbeam had been framed too low, his feet scraped the ground as the cart pulled away. Five years later, Whaley bought the land and erected his two-story Greek Revival residence directly over that blood-soaked soil.
Whaley designed the building to be the centerpiece of Old Town, leasing parts of it out as the San Diego County courtroom and a general store while raising his family upstairs. But tragedy clung to the house from the beginning. Multiple generations of the Whaley family suffered illness, financial collapse, and death inside its walls, including infant Thomas Whaley Jr. and daughter Violet Whaley.
