The story
On an unglamorous stretch of Western Avenue in East Hollywood, you check in with a doorman who scrutinizes your outfit before letting you inside. Opened in 2010 by Houston Hospitality, La Descarga was built to elevate the hidden-entrance conceit into immersive nightlife theater. Rather than hiding a simple basement lounge behind a door, they constructed a bi-level courtyard flanked by distressed stucco walls, velvet sofas, crystal chandeliers, and a wrought-iron spiral staircase that winds down to the main floor. High above the crowd, a live horn section plays salsa from an overhead bridge while Latin burlesque dancers perform across the elevated ledges from Thursday through Saturday.
When the main room gets dense with trumpet blasts and salsa dancers, step out to the covered outdoor cigar lounge. It functions as its own quiet ecosystem, complete with a dedicated bar pouring global rums ranging from unaged white spirits to dark soleras while guests light up cigars. Just remember the house rules before heading out: the doorman will turn you away at the door if you show up in a hoodie, T-shirt, or flip-flops.
