The story
You're walking down Fremont East when a 40-foot steel praying mantis looms over the sidewalk, perching directly above the entrance to a shopping complex constructed entirely from stacked shipping containers. Before it claimed permanent residency at 707 Fremont Street, this mechanical leviathan was built as an art car for Burning Man. It didn't lose its edge on the trip out of the Black Rock Desert.
The sculpture is wired with a seven-speaker sound system and heavy-duty plumbing that shoots real blasts of fire from its antennae high into the night sky. What most people standing on the pavement don't realize is that it isn't running on a hands-off computer loop—an operator sits tucked away inside a hidden compartment inside the mantis's steel frame, manually piloting the fire show.
What it's like
Head to the entrance near sunset to catch the local drum circle that gathers to 'wake' the mantis before the pilot starts throwing flame. When those antennae ignite, the sudden punch of radiant heat hits your face immediately and the sound is loud enough to startle anyone paying attention to their phone. Watching the show from the sidewalk is completely free. Afterwards, head past the mantis into the open-air courtyard to grab food out of a converted cargo container or take a run down the park's giant slide.
The move: Eat at one of the container restaurants, then linger near sunset for a drum circle to "wake" the mantis and watch it breathe fire before riding the giant slide inside the park.
