The story
You're walking down Fremont Street past typical casino neon when you bump into a 40-foot-tall, 30-foot-wide steel praying mantis perching over 707 Fremont. This isn't corporate public art designed by a committee; it was originally built as a flame-throwing art car for Burning Man. Hidden inside the steel chassis, an operator sits at the controls, firing off propane jets while managing a 4,000-watt surround-sound system piped through seven built-in speakers.
When the Mantis retired from the desert dust, it was installed outside Downtown Container Park as a permanent fixture. Just past its legs sits the heart-shaped 'Love Locket' sculpture—a leftover piece from the first Life Is Beautiful festival where couples clip padlocks onto the iron framework.
