Endless Bummer
A 700-square-foot room next door to Betelgeuse Betelgeuse, built by ten local artists led by Houston muralist Brian Dibala (Neon Thrash) as, in the bar's own words, a 'goth tropical purgatory' — dioramas, hidden occult easter eggs, and lighting that shifts through the night, somewhere between a tiki dive and a haunted diorama museum.
The story
You won't find neon plastic leis or cheerful ukulele tunes hidden inside this 700-square-foot sliver of Montrose. Endless Bummer was built around a far darker thesis: a self-described 'goth tropical purgatory' nestled next door to Betelgeuse Betelgeuse. Bar owner Chris Cusack handed the tiny footprint over to Houston muralist Brian Dibala (aka Neon Thrash) and nine other local artists, who hand-crafted every inch into a dense art installation disguised as a watering hole.
The space plays with the thin boundary between escapism and existential dread. Miniature dioramas are embedded into the walls, packed with hidden occult details and subtle easter eggs built directly into the booths and millwork. As night progresses, the interior lighting slowly shifts, transforming the room from a shadowy tiki dive into something closer to a haunted museum exhibit.
What it's like
Space is extremely tight—with only ten stools at the main bar and a handful of booths, the room fills up almost immediately after the doors unlock at 5:00 PM. Slip in early on a weeknight, grab a seat at the bar, and keep your eyes peeled while you sip: half the fun is spotting the weird miniature scenes tucked into the walls while the lighting scheme morphs around you.
The move: Go Thursday through Saturday (it's only open those three nights, 5pm-midnight), hunt for the hidden details built into the booths and dioramas, and order from the tropical-but-unpretentious cocktail list at the 10-seat bar.
