Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary — Friday Night Hikes
Houston Audubon's 18-acre forest sanctuary west of the Loop opens for "Give a Hoot" night hikes October through March, when small groups walk the pitch-dark woods by red flashlight hunting for the sanctuary's namesake owl.
The story
Just minutes off Memorial Drive in west Houston, the asphalt gives way to an 18-acre wedge of heavy woodland along Rummel Creek. Preserved by the Houston Audubon Society, the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary centers around a hand-built pine-log cabin erected in 1932 by Edith Moore herself. While daytime visitors come for native flora, basking stream turtles, and cardinals, the sanctuary turns into something far stranger once the sun drops and the gates would normally be locked.
From October through March, the sanctuary runs seasonal "Give a Hoot" night hikes that take small groups straight into the unlit forest. The main target of these after-dark prowls is the sanctuary's namesake owl population—along with whatever else stirs in the heavy underbrush along Rummel Creek once human foot traffic clears out for the evening.
What it's like
Park at the lot near the 1932 log cabin at 440 Wilchester Blvd before the 7:00 PM start. Once you step onto the trail, the dense canopy cuts off most city light bleed, leaving the woods genuinely pitch-black. Bring a red-lens flashlight—standard white beams wipe out your night vision and scare off the wildlife—plus bug spray and proper footwear for unlit dirt paths. For an hour and a half, your group moves slowly through the dark, keeping silent to listen for bird calls and scanning the high branches for glowing eyeshine.
The move: Park at the cabin lot with a red flashlight and bug spray for the 7–8:30pm walk through dark woods a few minutes off Memorial Drive, listening for owls and whatever else stirs once the trails would normally be closed.
