The story

Most Candlelight concerts drop a string quartet into a standard parish church or hotel ballroom, but in Lowry, Fever rolled its sea of battery-powered candles straight into Hangar 1 of the former Lowry Air Force Base. Built in 1941, this massive steel structure spent half a century housing military armaments and technical training before volunteers stepped in after the base's 1994 closure to preserve it as the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum. Instead of staring at stained glass while a violin hums, you take a seat on the concrete floor directly beneath the looming shadow of a 150-foot Rockwell B-1A Lancer bomber prototype and a 3/4-scale Lucasfilm X-Wing fighter.

The contrast is deliberately surreal: thousands of tiny faux flames flicker across the polished floor, casting warm amber light against Cold War jet intakes, Vietnam-era Huey helicopters, and massive landing gear tires. The music itself runs as tight, 60-minute back-to-back performances—string quartets tackling everything from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Hans Zimmer film scores to Radiohead or pop reimaginings. There is no acoustic dampening inside a 1940s military hangar, but that is the point—the raw reverberation of live strings bouncing off corrugated steel and vintage aircraft turns what could be a canned date-night franchise into a genuinely strange, cavernous evening gig.
