The story
In the early 1880s, prospectors chased a rich quartz vein into a hillside along Idaho's Silver Valley, hammering iron chisels by candlelight. When they walked away, they didn't just abandon the shaft—they dynamited the entrance shut, sealing their ore cart, hand tools, and candle stubs inside as if planning to return the following week. They never did. For over a century, Interstate 90 was paved right past the buried portal while the damp tunnel sat in absolute darkness, slowly coating its walls in vibrant smithsonite crystals.
The mine was rediscovered in 1991 when a landowner noticed water seeping out from behind the collapsed hillside rubble. In 1996, retired contract miner Bill Lane took over the property, cleared the 550-foot drift, and found high-grade gold ore sitting exactly where the original prospectors left off. Rather than stripping the rock for scrap, he restored the flooded tunnel as an authentic period piece, preserving one of the oldest hard-rock gold workings in North Idaho.
Guided tours take you down the narrow, hand-dug drift where the guide demonstrates single-jack and double-jack hand-drilling—the backbreaking technique of pounding a steel drill into rock with a sledgehammer before pneumatic power existed. Along the quartz vein, you can still spot remnants of raw ore, framed by colorful mineral stalactites and mineral crusts that grew undisturbed throughout the mine's hundred-year slumber.
What it's like
After pulling off Silver Valley Road near I-90, you will grab a hard hat in the gift shop and step directly into a 50°F subterranean tunnel where low rock clearance requires ducking in spots. The walking path can be slick and wet underfoot while the guide demonstrates the deafening ring of steel-on-steel hand drilling against the rock faces. After about 45 minutes underground, you emerge back out to the outdoor sluice troughs to grab a pan, swirl raw paydirt, and pick out gold flakes to take home in a small vial. Arrive on a weekday morning if you want to avoid school groups and summer weekend tour crowds.
