Working quietly without formal training or city permits, he spent years etching figures directly into the living rock faces before the land was absorbed into the Cleveland Metroparks system.
What remains today is a strange, open-air gallery slowly being reclaimed by nature. As you navigate the rock formations, stone faces reveal themselves through the lichens and soil. Founding fathers George Washington and Thomas Jefferson keep vigil alongside baseball legend Ty Cobb, surrounded by sculpted sphinxes, sailing ships, and cryptic crests carved straight into the cliffside.

The trip centers on a low-stress, 0.7-mile loop trail, but finding all the carvings takes real patience. There are no high-gloss interpretive plaques or arrows directing you to every face, so you'll spend your time scanning the mossy ledges, rock crevices, and overhangs. If you peer past the brush near the old homestead footprint off the main path, you can also spot the rusting, metallic ribcage of an abandoned 1940s truck left to decompose in the forest floor.
