Stand outside 5963 Harrison Avenue on Cincinnati's West Side, and you'll see a red-brick public schoolhouse built in 1894. But local folklore tells a far grimmer tale: between 1942 and 1955, neighborhood children began mysteriously vanishing. The legend points to head janitor Charlie McFree, who brushed off complaints about the horrific stench in the cellar as clogged plumbing. In October 1955, angry locals reportedly forced their way into the basement and discovered the remains of the missing students. Charlie vanished into thin air, but legend has it his spirit—and those of his victims—never left.

Whether you take the gruesome urban legend as fact or treat it as local dark folklore, the brick building itself is undeniably authentic. It operated as a real district school before sitting quiet for decades, eventually being repurposed into one of the most elaborate haunted attractions in the country. The set builders preserved the original 19th-century layout, turning former classrooms, a rotten biology lab, the cafeteria, and the cramped boiler room into a walk-through maze.
