The story

In the 1850s, German brewers carved arched lagering vaults four stories deep into Over-the-Rhine's limestone, relying on subterranean temperatures to cool and ferment their lager long before artificial refrigeration existed. When brewing halted, the dark brick tunnels sat vacant and forgotten for over 160 years. Local event producer Josh Heuser began excavating the space in 2019 to construct a subterranean music lounge, but the venue's odd name sprang from a dark moment during renovation: a contractor reported a newly installed lightbulb violently shattering on its own, followed by the sight of a toddler's phantom feet scrambling up a metal emergency ladder toward the street.

Look for the single glowing purple orb suspended above a doorway on Republic Street, then head down fifty stairs into the bedrock. The space divides into two subterranean chambers. Upfront sits the Rattle Room, a walk-in cocktail bar centered around a custom counter styled after a classic baby rattle. Past the stone arches sits The Den—a half-domed cabaret outfitted with crushed-velvet banquettes, marble bistro tables, crystal chandeliers, and a curtained stage hosting live jazz beneath 170-year-old pre-Prohibition brickwork.
