The story

Before Uptown Charlotte completely surrendered to glass-and-steel banking towers, retail was king on North Tryon Street. Case in point: a 130,000-square-foot Sears department store erected in 1949. Rather than flattening the sprawling behemoth for another high-rise condo build, the space was reclaimed as the VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) Center—a massive, labyrinthine artist incubator operating right in the shadow of the corporate skyline.

Step through the doors and the polished sheen of modern Uptown evaporates. What used to be aisles of lawnmowers and department displays has been partitioned into a chaotic grid of studios for hundreds of local painters, sculptors, ceramicists, and performers. You'll find half-finished canvasses drying in former retail alcoves, sculptors at work down long corridors, and independent performance troupes occupying what were once storage rooms and stock bays.

Because the complex operates grassroots-style, it keeps a low profile relative to its sheer footprint. Tucked deep within the maze of hallways is the Charlotte Comedy Theater alongside an ever-shifting array of private studios and pop-up gallery walls. It's one of the few places left in the city center where Charlotte's creative underground operates entirely on its own terms.
