The story

For over a century, the industrial yard at 904 Post Street produced cast iron pipes rather than digital art. Founded in 1901, the Charlotte Pipe and Foundry spent 122 years churning out heavy plumbing infrastructure between Uptown and South End before relocating its primary foundry operations to rural Oakboro in 2023. Rather than letting the 55.5-acre industrial footprint sit vacant, non-profit presenter Blumenthal Arts claimed a 32,000-square-foot warehouse on the site and opened Blume Studios, anchoring what is now branded as the Iron District.

Engineered specifically for massive spatial computing and free-roaming virtual reality exhibitions that cannot fit into standard proscenium theaters, the venue features multi-stage setups like Stage 1 and Stage 2. Here, visitors strap into headsets to walk through full-scale virtual environments—from the International Space Station in 'Space Explorers: The Infinite' to ancient Egyptian tombs and prehistoric forests. It represents Charlotte’s attempt to bypass traditional theatrical touring pipelines and host global immersive experiences directly.

The weirdness lies in the collision of high-end spatial computing with raw industrial bones. Outside the headsets, exposed structural steel trusses and industrial grounds remain intact, complemented by repurposed shipping-container restrooms and gravel paths. You didn't hear it from us, but stepping out of a simulated zero-gravity spacewalk straight back into the humid North Carolina air will make your physical sense of gravity feel hilariously untrustworthy for at least fifteen minutes.
