Silver Bow Twin Drive-In

The story

If you drive six miles south of Butte off I-15 at Exit 119, you hit a patch of dirt road leading to two screen towers rising out of the brush. The Hansen family built the Silver Bow in 1977 as a single-screen lot before adding a second screen in 1980 to create Montana's first twin drive-in. But the real piece of scavenged history sits right in the middle of the lot: the concession stand and projection booth building were originally built for a drive-in near Deer Lodge that operated from 1949 until 1973. When that site shuttered, the building was unbolted, loaded onto a flatbed truck, and hauled down the highway to be resurrected here.

Because of where Butte sits on the map, midsummer dusk drags on endlessly. You cannot project a clear image onto an outdoor screen while the sun is still bleeding over the Divide, which means double features rarely start rolling until around 9:30 PM. To hear the audio, you can tune your car's stereo to the venue's FM frequency, or hand over $5 at the counter to rent a retrofitted post-style speaker—a heavy little unit that hangs on your window as a direct nod to the original mid-century setup.

It is an operational time capsule held together by cash-only admission and late-night sky physics. You're watching first-run movies from a pickup bed under a sky that takes forever to go dark, serviced by a salvaged 1940s projection booth sitting in the high desert. You didn't hear it from us, but while outdoor screens across the country continue to get bulldozed, this frankensteined survivor is still up and running.
