Headframe Spirits Tasting Room

The story

Butte sits under the looming steel headframes—the elevator gantry towers that lowered thousands of miners thousands of feet down into the pitch black of the "Richest Hill on Earth." Headframe Spirits didn't just borrow the silhouette for local flavor; they named their liquor directly after the legendary, dangerous mine shafts that built and swallowed the town: Orphan Girl, High Ore, Neversweat, Destroying Angel. It is Butte’s hardscrabble history distilled into high-proof spirits.

The operation runs on custom, hand-built continuous-flow stills engineered in-house. Walk down South Montana Street in Uptown Butte and you can look straight through street-level windows to watch the copper column stills in motion. Step inside, and there’s no glass divider separating you from the craft—the tasting room opens straight onto the working production floor, filling the room with the warm, humid scent of fermenting grain while the machinery hums a few paces from your glass.

The centerpiece of the tasting room is a massive, salvaged wooden bar that carries its own scar tissue: it’s a century-old survivor on loan from Butte's World Museum of Mining. You’re sipping bourbon, rye, or gin poured over timber that was serving miners back when copper was king and Butte was the most uninhibited town in the West.
