The story
Kayla Lambrecht had spent nine years running a local fashion boutique in Uptown Butte before a family axe-throwing contest hooked her on the sport. Realizing the historic mining city lacked a spot dedicated to throwing steel, she traded clothing racks for wooden targets and opened Montana Axe Bar & Throwing Co. right on West Park Street.
Rather than handing you a hatchet and leaving you to your own devices, the house assigns lane coaches to adjust your distance and rotation until you're sticking bullseyes. Between competitive brackets, you can order homemade pizza, grab a beer or glass of wine, or pivot over to the venue's indoor golf simulator suite to work on your drive.
What it's like
Step through the front door at 37 West Park Street and you'll immediately catch the heavy thud of hatchets biting timber mixed with the aroma of baking pizza crust. After signing your waiver—and assuming you remembered closed-toe shoes—a coach will walk you through throwing mechanics, usually telling you to step back if your blade lands handle-first. League nights get loud and competitive on weeknights, so head in during an early afternoon window if you want quiet lane time and direct coaching.
The move: Split a homemade pizza and a couple of beers, then let a lane coach teach you both to stick a bullseye and settle it in a head-to-head bracket.
