The Break Room

A laid-back beer-and-wine bar across from the MSU campus that connects directly into Colombo's Pizza's game room, nicknamed Joe's Fun Zone after the owner's late father. Inside you'll find pinball, Skee-Ball, air hockey, a pool table and shelves of board games. There's even a Wednesday-night Skee-Ball league through a local rec-sports outfit, so it's as much neighborhood hangout as arcade.

The story

Westgate Village has sat across from the Montana State University campus since 1957, but step into 1011 West College Street and you'll find a living-room lounge that deliberately dodges the rowdy college-bar script. Launched by Seth and Cassie Colombo—owners of the neighborhood staple Colombo's Pizza & Pasta—alongside general manager Kyle Suta, the space connects directly into Joe's Fun Zone. That back game room was named in memory of Cassie's father, Joe Colombo, who bought the family pizzeria back in the 1980s.

Inside, colorful murals painted by Florida artist Daniel Barojas stretch across the walls, framing an old-fashioned soda fountain that pours alcohol-free craft sodas alongside Montana draught beers and wines. The menu relies heavily on Colombo's pizza ovens next door, turning out Anaconda-style Wind's Pasties smothered in beer gravy made from Guinness, Mexican lager chili, and wheat beer nacho cheese sauce—or you can just get a pizza delivered straight to your bar stool.

What makes the venue work is its low-key community routine: daytime visitors drop in to work on laptops or grab board games off the shelf, while nights lean into casual arcade play. Between pinball, air hockey, a pool table, and Skee-Ball, it functions as a relaxed neighborhood hangout—complete with an organized Wednesday-night Skee-Ball league run by local rec-sports outfit Overtime Sports Bozeman.

What it's like

You walk in expecting another packed campus taphouse, but instead you get an unhurried lounge where you can grab a Montana beer flight or house soda and drift into the arcade room. The vibe is easygoing—roll Skee-Ball, play pool, or pull down a board game without elbowing through a dense weekend crowd. Food is effortless since you can order Colombo's pizza delivered right to your table. You didn't hear it from us, but swing by on a weekday afternoon if you want quiet table space and quick access to the games before the student crowd arrives.

The move: Grab a flight of beer, then settle a grudge over back-to-back rounds of Skee-Ball and pinball.
