The story
Behind a railing company off Turnpike Street in Canton, Bay #2 doesn't look like an educational institution. It looks like what it actually is: the active workspace of Hammersmith Studios, a working forge founded in 2004 that crafts custom ironwork and restores historic architectural metalwork for high-profile sites like Yale’s Sterling Memorial Library and the Harvard Lampoon building in Cambridge. Sharing this cinderblock workshop is the Classical Blacksmithing School of Boston.
You won't find a slick online booking system or an automated checkout cart here. Operations are kept intentionally low-tech, managed through direct phone calls and email, with payments handled by cash, check, or Zelle. Instead of watching a slideshow, you are handed leather aprons, placed in front of an active forge, and taught how to stand at the anvil. The instruction focuses on practical mechanics—hammer swing efficiency, drawing out metal, bending, twisting, and setting reverse curves—so you move hot steel without blowing out your shoulders.
What it's like
Tucked directly behind Southeast Railing Company, you'll locate the school at Bay #2 when you catch the heat and coal smoke off the shop floor. The vibe inside is working-shop industrial: noisy, warm, and zero-frills. Class sizes are intentionally kept small—typically four to six people with two instructors—meaning you won't be waiting around for an open anvil or instructor feedback. You're required to bring your own safety glasses, work gloves with leather palms, and hydration, and you must wear leather boots or work shoes.
