The story
Silver City didn't get turned into a plastic tourist trap with costumed gunfighters, nor did it rot into firewood. When gold and silver strikes hit War Eagle Mountain in the 1860s, this remote mountain hollow blew up into an Idaho Territory powerhouse complete with 2,500 residents, twelve ore mills, Idaho's first telegraph line, and its first daily newspaper. When the veins dried up and the county seat shifted to Murphy in 1934, the crowds pulled out, but the town never burned down.
Roughly seventy original 19th-century wooden buildings still sit in this high basin at 6,200 feet, preserved not by park rangers, but by direct descendants of the original miners who still hold the private deeds.
