Neon Grove

The story

Before the Capital City Development Corporation installed a designated sidewalk gallery on Grove Street, these six neon relics spent decades dodging demolition crews and scrap heaps. They owe their survival to Vangie Osborn, founder of the non-profit Signs of Our Times, who spent over twenty years collecting discarded commercial signage from Boise's vanishing mid-century storefronts. Mounted along a single block in the Linen District, the lineup features six distinct survivors arranged east to west: L&B Beverage, Blue Bell Auto Park, Sands Motel, Truck Stop Café, Mercury Cleaners, and Chuck Dragoo Auto Sales. Each sign was salvaged from a defunct local business, stripped of rust, and rewired to its original gas-charged state by local restoration specialists including YESCO, Classic Design Studio, and Rocket Neon.

Unveiled in October 2024 as part of the Rebuild Linen Blocks infrastructure project, the site operates less like a sterile public art display and more like an open-air graveyard for Boise's erased streetscape. Stewardship of the installation was officially handed over to the City of Boise Department of Arts & History to keep the electrical transformers maintained and the gas tubes firing. Instead of peering at salvaged metal behind museum glass, you can walk directly underneath six rewired remnants of the town's mid-century commercial past while city traffic hums past on Grove Street.
