The story
Zen West on York Road looks like a standard, loud neighborhood cantina where crowds gather for Tex-Mex plates and draft beer. But if you walk past the main bar and find what looks like a plain, hand-scrawled chalkboard wall, push on it. The hidden panel swings open to reveal Clandestino, a dedicated agave speakeasy tucked quietly into the building's backroom.
Conceived by veteran Baltimore bartender Charlie Vascellaro, the space trades the noise of the front restaurant for a much more subdued atmosphere under a rustic wagon-wheel chandelier and skylight. Instead of sugary frozen margaritas, the focus shifts to technical tequila and mezcal builds, including house favorites like the Ginger Ahumado—shaken with smoky Banhez mezcal, Combier orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar.

The room is dark, small, and feels like a private house bar away from the York Road bustle.
