The story
Pull into an unassuming North Austin strip mall on Justin Lane and you'll spot Santa Claus perched on the roof alongside four plastic reindeer. Step through the doorway, and December 25th has been frozen in amber since 1972. Founder Frances Lala opened this neighborhood dive and strung up holiday lights, garland, and tinsel that simply never came down. Over four decades behind the bar, she built a dark, glowing sanctuary to Christmas kitsch—complete with floor-to-ceiling vintage snow globes, hanging stockings, and the leg lamp from A Christmas Story glowing in the corner.
Ask three regulars why the decorations stayed up, and you'll hear three different local legends. Some swear Frances kept the tree lit waiting for her son to return from the Vietnam War—a story that inspired Kenny Chesney's 2016 song 'Jesus and Elvis.' Others claim her husband walked out on Christmas Eve, or that she just loathed the chore of taking down garland in January. Frances was fiercely private and loved letting rumors swirl without setting the record straight. When new operators took over in 2015, they left every inch of tinsel untouched, keeping North Austin's most surreal holiday time warp intact.
