The story
In 2009, local creator Josh Frank wanted the vintage drive-in experience without committing to a three-hour trek across rural Texas. His fix was pure Austin ingenuity: skip the 500-car country field and drop a pocket-sized screen right inside the city. Starting with just a handful of car slots in an East Cesar Chavez alleyway, he launched the world's first micro-scale drive-in, piping film audio directly into dashboard FM radios.
After bouncing through various East Austin lots and airport runways over the years, the downtown iteration found its altitude at 300 San Antonio Street: the open-air roof deck of a multi-story downtown parking garage. Surrounded by glowing glass skyscrapers instead of open pasture, a tight pack of roughly fifteen to twenty cars backs into concrete spots to watch 1980s nostalgia flicks, retro creature features, and cult indies under the city skyline.
What it's like
Arriving means spiraling up through the parking garage structure until you break out onto the open top deck, where ground crew hand-guide your bumper into its designated slot. Gates open about 30 to 40 minutes before showtime, giving you time to back in, drop the tailgate, or set up a trunk bed lair before dusk. The downtown garage setup is famously BYOB, so pack a cooler with your own drinks and tailgate snacks, or grab popcorn and candy at the rooftop concession setup. Before the screen lights up, make sure you know how to turn off your vehicle's automatic daytime running lights; if your battery runs flat from tuning into the FM broadcast on accessory power, staff keep jumper cables ready on the roof.
