Keeper of the Plains Ring of Fire
At the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers, a 44-foot Cor-Ten steel statue stands on a stone promontory reachable by two bow-and-arrow-inspired cable bridges. Most nights, five fire drums set on boulders at the statue's feet are lit by hand and burn for about 15 minutes, ringing the Keeper in flame against the dark. It is free, brief, and weather-dependent, lit at 9 p.m. in summer and 7 p.m. in winter.
The story
Where the Big Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers meet in central Wichita, a 44-foot Cor-Ten steel figure designed by Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin stands elevated on a rock promontory. You reach it by crossing one of two cable footbridges engineered to look like strung longbows. Weathered rust-red against the prairie sky, the sculpture is striking enough on its own, but the real draw happens after dusk when the city turns on the gas.
At the Keeper's feet, five fire drums built into boulders around the base ignite in heavy, roaring jets of flame. This isn't an automated, push-button pyrotechnic sequence. City operators have to trigger the burn manually, standing nearby to ensure wind speeds haven't spiked or river levels haven't risen to submerge the burners. If a stray goose or a human wanders too close to the rocks, the burn gets scrubbed on the spot.
When conditions align, the flames burn uninterrupted for exactly fifteen minutes, casting heavy orange light across the dark river confluence and turning the steel silhouette into a towering figure against the dark. It is loud, brief, surprisingly hot if you are standing on the bow bridges, and entirely free.
What it's like
Aim to arrive at the riverfront plaza about fifteen minutes before ignition—9 p.m. during daylight saving time in summer, or 7 p.m. during winter. Position yourself on one of the bow-and-arrow footbridges or along the lower plaza rocks where you can actually feel the heat coming off the fire drums. Keep an eye on the flagpoles nearby: if high winds are whipping or the river is running exceptionally high, don't bother waiting, as operators will cancel the burn without notice. Otherwise, expect a modest crowd to gather silently along the water, watch the flames roar for a quarter-hour, and vanish the second the gas cuts off.
The move: Walk out across one of the cable bridges at dusk and stand at the base of the statue to watch the five fire drums get lit and burn for fifteen minutes.
