The story

Before the four-story yellow-brick fortress went up in 1917, the original 1907 clubhouse on the corner of 14th Street was wiped out by a fire. The community rebuilt immediately, laying down yellow brick to create a massive sanctuary for Ybor City's Cuban cigar workers. El Círculo Cubano operated as a mutual-aid society where immigrant rollers paid monthly dues in exchange for complete medical care, a pharmacy, a library, a four-story theater, and a grand ballroom, keeping the exile community grounded in the 'Cuba Libre!' political movement championed by José Martí.

The club's record of dark events is brutal and specific. In 1934, a high-stakes argument during a board meeting turned fatal when one member pulled a gun and shot another dead right inside the building. Down in the basement, an indoor swimming pool—once a luxury amenity for working-class immigrants—became the site of another tragedy when a young boy drowned.

You didn't hear it from us, but those historic deaths left behind a very specific kind of residue. Paranormal investigators and staff frequently record the sound of isolated, disembodied piano notes ringing out from the silent theater stage. Others standing in the main lobby late at night report seeing a figure known as the 'Woman in White' quietly descending the grand staircase before disappearing.
