One locker has a knob hidden inside and swings open into a velvet-and-chandelier space with brick walls, an antique fireplace, and live jazz on Sunday and Monday nights. The menu leans Prohibition-era cocktails alongside small bites like a meat-and-cheese plate and macarons. Open Thursday through Sunday, evenings only.
The story
You walk into Bonjour Vietnam on California Avenue SW, step past diners slurping pho, and push back into what looks like an employee-only storage alcove. Stacked coolers and banks of dull gray metal lockers line the space. To anyone watching, you look completely lost on your way to a utility closet.
Reach for the locker unit and target the third door from the bottom right. Find the knob concealed inside and pull. The steel frame swings open, trading the cold restaurant backroom for a 1920s hideaway built from exposed brick, dark velvet seating, hanging chandeliers, and an antique fireplace.
The bar sticks primarily to Prohibition-era drinks like the Bee's Knees, paired with a snack menu that runs from Cajun wings to meat-and-cheese plates and macarons. If you slip in on a Sunday or Monday night around 8 p.m., the low-lit brick room fills out with live jazz.
What it's like
Expect a split-second of hesitation as you navigate the restaurant backroom and stare down a wall of lockers. Find the third door from the bottom right, turn the hidden knob, and step inside. Seating in the velvet den is limited and fills up early on weekends, but weeknight visits—particularly Sunday and Monday live-jazz nights—are quieter. You can order a bowl of pho upfront before retreating behind the steel locker door for a cocktail.
