Entry No. 40 — the Seattle file — filed under: hands-on
Fire Horse Forge
A Ballard bladesmithing studio where you go deeper than a one-session souvenir. Over a two-day workshop you make a 6-7 inch chef's knife from high-carbon steel, learning design, forging or stock removal, heat treating, grinding, handle selection, profiling and edge geometry. Classes are capped at four people, so it stays close, intense and genuinely instructional. You leave with a ready-to-use kitchen knife you made yourself.
The story
Tucked away in Ballard, artist and blacksmith David Tuthill runs a shop where raw high-carbon steel gets hammered, heated, and ground into high-end cutlery. Fire Horse Forge isn't one of those sanitized weekend craft workshops where an instructor does eighty percent of the labor while you hold tongs for a photo ops. It is a focused, hands-on immersion into true bladesmithing.
Over a full two-day workshop, you work through the complete arc of making a culinary blade. You lay out your design, shape the metal through forging or stock removal, and dive straight into heat treating, grinding, profiling the edge geometry, and fitting the handle. Tuthill keeps the technical oversight sharp, but the physical work and the finished edge are yours.
Because every workshop is capped at just four students, there is no waiting around for tool time or getting lost in a crowd. You spend two days covered in shop grit, and you leave holding a razor-sharp, ready-to-use 6- to 7-inch high-carbon chef's knife that you built yourself.
What it's like
Prepare for two full days of heat, noise, grinding dust, and tight focus. You won't get the actual studio address until your class spot is confirmed, keeping the workspace strictly private. Book well in advance—with only four seats per class, spots sell out long before workshop weekends arrive.
The move: Spend a weekend forging matching chef's knives you'll actually cook with at home.
📍 Before you go Two-day commitment with only four spots per class; book well ahead.
