Illuminated Perfume / School of the Lost Arts
Perfumer Roxana Villa's studio inside the Lena Street Lofts (building A, sharing the building with Iconik Coffee) is part scent bar, part cabinet of curiosities, part school, filled with herb jars, hanging flowers and distilling equipment where she makes all-natural botanical perfumes (some solid perfumes use beeswax from her own hives). It runs mostly by appointment. The Santa Fe Reporter (2019) described walking in as 'stepping through a magic portal into an aromatic choose-your-own-adventure story.'
The story
Department store perfume counters try to sell you mass-market chemical cocktails bottled under industrial spotlights. Roxana Villa took the opposite route inside Unit A6 of the Lena Street Lofts. Her workshop—operating under Illuminated Perfume and the School of the Lost Arts—is an apothecary-lab where brass distilling equipment, glass herb jars, and drying flora take precedence over synthetic aromachemicals.
Villa extracts her olfactory palette entirely from real plants, crafting liquid botanical perfumes and solid formulations bound with raw beeswax harvested directly from her own hives. There are no petro-chemical fixatives or synthetic aldehydes hiding here. Instead, the space functions as a living laboratory for traditional alchemy, keeping alive the near-lost art of raw plant extraction.
What it's like
Head into Building A at the Lena Street Lofts—the same building as Iconik Coffee—and look for Unit A6. Because the studio runs primarily by appointment, you won't be elbowing through tourists. Inside, hanging plants filter the light and shelves of raw plant essences line the walls. During a private scent consultation or workshop, you'll sit down with Villa to work through her botanical library, testing unrefined plant extracts and blending a custom fragrance without a single drop of factory-made scent filler.
The move: Book an appointment for a private scent consultation or perfume-making session together and blend a custom fragrance from her library of plant essences — no synthetic 'chemical cocktails,' as she puts it — instead of buying a bottle off a department-store shelf.
