Seacliff State Beach — SS Palo Alto wreck
A WWI concrete tanker too late for the war was towed here in 1930 and refitted as a floating ballroom-and-café amusement pier — it cracked in half in a 1932 storm, was sold to the state for $1, and has spent nine decades slowly disintegrating into Monterey Bay; the pier out to it was finally demolished in March 2023 after successive winter storms tore the stern off, leaving the rusted concrete hull visible as an offshore ruin and artificial reef.
The story
In 1919, the U.S. built the SS Palo Alto out of poured concrete because wartime steel was in short supply. The war ended before the 435-foot tanker ever carried a drop of fuel, leaving a massive slab of reinforced cement floating without a purpose. The Seacliff Amusement Company stepped in, towed the vessel to Aptos in 1929, grounded it right off Seacliff State Beach, and converted it into an offshore entertainment platform outfitted with a ballroom, café, carnival booth, and deck-side heated pool.
The party was short-lived. A heavy storm cracked the vessel's hull in 1932, bankrupting the company and leaving the ship stuck in the surf. The owners sold the wreck to the state of California for a single dollar. For generations, visitors could walk out along a wooden pier directly onto the deck, where swells pushing under the hull would force blasts of salt air up through cracks in the deck floorboards like a giant pneumatic lung.
Decades of salt air and ocean violence eventually caught up. Winter storms in early 2023 ripped off the vessel's stern and destroyed the walkway, prompting California State Parks to demolish the remaining pier structure in March 2023. What sits offshore today is an isolated, crumbling concrete skeleton being slowly ground down by Monterey Bay.
What it's like
You can no longer walk onto the ship or down the pier—that access vanished when the wrecked pier was torn down in March 2023. The experience now takes place entirely from the sand or the bluff-top trail above 201 State Park Drive. Head down around low tide to get a clean look at the grey, fractured hull poking out of the breakers, surrounded by sea life that has claimed the artificial reef. Bring a jacket, claim a beach fire pit near sunset, and confirm current park hours before you head out.
The move: Walk the bluff-top trail at low tide to see what's left of the self-styled 'Ship of Dreams' poking out of the surf, then picnic at the fire pits where Depression-era Santa Cruzans once danced on a boat that was already sinking.
