Entry No. 15 — the San Antonio file — filed under: speakeasy

Salvador Dobbs

The exterior still reads 'Ewe & Eye' — the yarn-and-toy shop that occupied this spot for nearly 30 years — but push inside and it's Boerne's speakeasy-styled nightlife bar, complete with a private champagne room, a stained-glass peacock, and porch swings over Cibolo Creek.

The story

If you drive down River Road in Boerne looking for number 512, you will see a storefront that still reads 'Ewe & Eye.' For nearly three decades, local families came to this spot for craft yarn, wooden toys, and knitting supplies. The sign stayed up after the shop closed—partly as a nod to local history, and partly as disguise. Push through the front door expecting plush craft goods, and you land directly inside a secret nightlife lounge.

Opened in 2018 by Veronica Brown, the space completely replaced the former retail inventory with a speakeasy setup anchored by a stained-glass peacock and a private champagne room. Pass through the rear of the building and the atmosphere shifts again: a wide deck equipped with porch swings sits directly over the banks of Cibolo Creek.

What it's like

Keep your eyes on the address numbers along River Road because there is no big street-facing sign for Salvador Dobbs. Once inside, grab a drink—happy hour features five-dollar margaritas—and make a move for the back deck to grab a porch swing over Cibolo Creek before sunset. Early hours are relaxed and local, but expect things to turn loud later on Thursday karaoke nights or when weekend live bands take over.

The move: Find the old toy-shop signage (that's the whole point), settle in for Hat's Off happy hour, then take the porch swings over Cibolo Creek at sunset before Thursday karaoke or weekend live music kicks in.
