Jack's Axe Throwing
This is Pueblo's everything-under-one-roof play barn: hatchet lanes for axe throwing alongside the 40 lanes of Big Daddy's Sunset Bowl, plus an arcade and a bar with food service. The bowling-house bones give it a worn, local-haunt feel that generic franchise axe joints don't have. You can rotate from throwing axes to bowling to grabbing a beer without leaving the building.
The story
Bryan Rossmanith originally built Jack's Axe Throwing as Pueblo's first mobile axe pit—a hatchet rig towed on wheels to local gatherings. When outdoor events ground to a halt in 2020, Rossmanith steered the operation indoors, setting up permanent targets inside the 40-lane behemoth known as Big Daddy's Sunset Bowl on South Prairie Avenue.
That move saved the venue from feeling like a sterile suburban chain bar with corporate safety tape. Instead, you throw steel in a space that inherited authentic bowling-alley patina: scuffed floorboards, blinking arcade cabinets, the low hum of draft taps, and the thunderous crash of pins echoing through the cavernous room next door. Alongside the hatchet lanes, they keep oddball side games alive—including Hammerschlagen, where you take turns driving nails into a wooden block.
What it's like
Walk through the main doors of Big Daddy's Sunset Bowl and follow the thud of wood to the dedicated axe lanes. It is loud, unapologetically retro, and devoid of pretense. Don't risk walking up cold on a weekend; reserve a lane online before you go. The best play is ordering a pitcher and a plate of bar burgers from the Sunset Bowl counter to eat right at your throwing pit, then rolling straight onto a bowling lane to settle whatever scores your axes left unhandled.
The move: Book a hatchet lane to chuck axes at the target for an hour, then settle a grudge over a few bowling frames and burgers at the bar.
