The story
Back in the 1980s, local residents in South Monterey County realized the rapid modernization of the 'Salad Bowl of the World' was silently scrubbing away the valley's rural past. Rather than letting pioneer-era structures rot or face the wrecking ball, they took a literal approach to preservation: they began picking up abandoned 19th-century buildings from all across the county and moving them onto a single riverbank lot inside King City's San Lorenzo Park.
What exists today is a ghost-town assemblage of seven relocated historic structures anchored around late-19th-century rural life. Among the haul is the 1887 La Gloria Schoolhouse, complete with its original single-room layout, and a 1903 Southern Pacific train depot pulled from the edge of destruction. Around these, you'll find a working blacksmith shop, irrigation exhibition spaces, and open-air barns crammed with century-old tractors, massive threshing machines, and even a pristine 1927 Lincoln sedan.
What it's like
Pull into San Lorenzo Park right off Broadway Street, and you can walk directly into this outdoor cluster without paying a dime. The vibe is quiet, dusty, and unpretentious—you won't find tour groups or velvet ropes here. You can step inside the La Gloria schoolhouse and sit at the actual wooden desks where farm kids sat in the 1880s, or poke around the display barns to inspect heavy rusted iron machinery up close. Standard hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, though you should verify before making the trek down Highway 101. Bring a picnic to eat in the park right along the Salinas River afterward.
