The Keep Restaurant (former Greenough Mansion)
This fine-dining restaurant sits on the foundation of the historic Greenough Mansion, built by congressman and businessman Thomas Greenough in 1902 and later moved to the South Hills when I-90 was constructed. The original mansion burned in a 1992 fire and reopened as a restaurant a year later. Owners and staff have long attributed prankish incidents, swinging chandeliers, flickering lights, exploding glassware, to the ghost of Greenough's daughter Edith.
The story
The building at 102 Ben Hogan Drive didn't start out in the South Hills. In 1902, copper businessman and politician Thomas Greenough hired architect A. J. Gibson to construct a grand three-story mansion on Missoula's north side. Six decades later, federal highway engineers drew Interstate 90 directly through its path. Rather than let the wrecking ball have it, crews hauled the entire structure across town in the 1960s and anchored it above Missoula's oldest golf course, reopening it as a steakhouse named The Mansion.
Then came June 11, 1992. A destructive fire tore through the building, reducing the historic relocated structure to its foundation. Exactly a year later, the restaurant rose from the ashes as Shadows Keep—now known simply as The Keep—rebuilt on the exact concrete footprint of the lost mansion. Moving a 1902 house across town only to watch it burn down and get rebuilt seems to have left behind a few unresolved lingering leaseholders.
Servers and owners have long blamed the venue's weirdest habits on Edith Greenough, Thomas’s daughter. The reported phenomena aren't subtle creepy bumps in the night—they're specific, theatrical dining-room pranks, including chandeliers swaying overhead without a draft, light bulbs flickering on cue, and stemware occasionally shattering mid-service on tables. You didn't hear it from us, but if your Pinot Noir glass chimes for no reason, go ahead and toast Edith.

Driving up the hill places you at an elevated lodge-like setting looking out across the valley. Inside, the tone is classic dark fine dining: dim, moody lighting, heavy wood accents, white tablecloths, and panoramic window tables facing sunset over the golf course. The lounge opens at 4:00 p.m. with dinner starting at 5:00 p.m., so book a reservation in advance, dress up a notch, and keep an eye on the overhead lighting during your meal.
